  Star Power 2011 Bridge Walk

Star Power Bridge Walk Great Success

Over 160 Copper Country children, parents, grandparents and concerned citizens took to the bridge on Thursday, May 19th, in support of state investment in early childhood education, child care, health care, and other services. The walk began at the Ramada Inn in Hancock, continued across the Portage Lake Lift Bridge, and ended at the Kestner Pavilion in the Chutes and Ladders Park in Houghton.

Marchers carried signs and donned T-shirts touting the importance of investing in our children – our future. Walkers then were treated to free ice cream courtesy of Frank Fiala and 5th and Elm Coffee shop and orange drink courtesy of MacDonalds at the park. Walkers were then given free trolley rides back to the Ramada with Red Jacket Trolley. Participants signed letters to Representative Huuki, Senator Casperson, and Governor Snyder.

Collaborative members from BHK Child Development, Superior Americorps, Copper Country Community Mental Health, the Western U.P. Health Department and Portage Health helped with registration, children’s activities, serving ice cream, and guiding folks across the bridge. Heather Poll, member of the Copper Country Parent Coalition served as coordinator for the event.

The third annual bridge walk was sponsored by the Copper Country Great Start Collaborative to coincide with the fifth annual statewide Star Power event held in Lansing. Parent Liaison, Heather Store, attended the Lansing event and met with Representative Matt Huuki to discuss the importance of programs for young children and their families. Heather joined 4,000 others in Lansing to show their support for young children and Michigan’s future.
